PURPOSE: The Director of Music provides vision, overall leadership, and coordination for a comprehensive music ministry for the church. This is a full-time position.
QUALIFICATIONS: The Director of Music will be a professing Christian with the education and experience commensurate with leading a comprehensive program of church music; will have an advanced degree in music or equivalent experience; will be knowledgeable about Reformed worship; will be familiar with a wide range of sacred music; will demonstrate proven success as an experienced and creative builder of church music programs; will have the administrative abilities necessary to manage the music program in an active and growing congregation; and will foster a love of and appreciation for sacred music among the entire congregation.
ACCOUNTABILITY: To the Pastor as Head of Staff and to the Session.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Envision, design, implement, and coordinate a comprehensive ministry of music for the whole congregation.
2. Serve as the primary director/conductor of choral and instrumental groups for children, youth, and adults, and develop new vocal and instrumental groups within the congregation, fostering a sense of our offering musical gifts to God.
3. Supervise other staff and oversee volunteers who work in the music ministry of the church.
4. Serve as a spokesperson and advocate for music ministries with the Worship Commission, the Session, and in the congregation.
5. Along with the Pastor(s) and the Worship Commission, design and plan for the congregation’s worship.
6. Meet regularly with the rest of the church staff for planning and coordination.
7. Design seasonal calendars for music in worship, ordinarily corresponding to the passages suggested in the Revised Common Lectionary, and for special presentations.
8. Oversee the maintenance of the church’s music library, purchasing new music when necessary, within established budgetary guidelines.
9. Have primary responsibility for oversight and maintenance of the church’s musical instruments.
10. Actively recruit participants for all the music ministries of the church.
11. Provide input into the annual budgeting procedure of the Worship Commission, and oversee appropriate parts of the Commission’s approved budget, providing regular reports on expenditures to the Commission.
12. Provide a wide range of musical types and styles for the congregation’s worship and life.
13. Obtain the services of instrumentalists, both paid and volunteer, for particular musical presentations.
14. Serve as a teacher in the areas of music and liturgy.
15. Depending on credentials and experience, oversee a music internship program for undergraduate and graduate students in music from area colleges and universities.
RELATIONSHIPS: The Director of Music works closely with other members of the staff, the Worship Commission, and the Session, to ensure adequate leadership and support for existing programs and in developing and supporting new programs; embodies caring Christian leadership and relationships with all those involved in the church’s ministries of music; and attends Staff and Session meetings, and serves as a Staff Resource to the Worship Commission.
EVALUATION: Performance reviews will be conducted 3 months after employment, and annually thereafter, by the Pastor as Head of Staff and the Staff Commission. The Staff Commission will annually review compensation and benefits and make recommendations to the Session.
